Ryoko NAKANO

Ryoko works on projects related to decarbonizing cities.  She holds a Doctoral degree for Engineering from Nagoya University and a Masters in International Economics from Johns Hopkins University (SAIS).

She served as a senior policy researcher for a project that established a decarbonization system to promote energy efficiency in buildings in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (FY 2019 - FY 2021) which had a plan to reduce the city’s energy intensity, and with the support from Tokyo Metropolitan Government. She analyzed the city’s buildings; developed energy efficiency and renewable energy installation guidelines to efficiently refurbish city-owned facilities; and developed a GHG emission estimation tool for reduction potential, with the aim of establishing a permanent institutional foundation for low-carbon buildings in Kuala Lumpur’s 1955 city-owned facilities. The project resulted with Kuala Lumpur developing a budget plan to refurbish their own public buildings using data driven analysis. 

She also served as a project manager to promote low carbon city development in west Java, Indonesia which was receiving donor funding from ICLEI, and AFD.  To implement the action plans that had been developed by such organizations, she designed and conducted social studies to identify factors that trigger change in energy using behavior / habits in terms of appropriate information communication and social participation levels using data modeling.
