World Adaptation Science Program session on global goal on adaptation
When we say operationalization of something, we may tend to think that the goals are already set and that we are talking about how to implement goals. However, that is not the case here. We don’t have a well-defined global goal/s on adaptation yet. We only have a broad direction on GGA from the Paris Agreement and there is a growing work by...

In contrast to other natural disasters, droughts may develop gradually and last for extended periods of time. TheWorld Meteorological Organization advises using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) for the early identification of drought and understanding of its characteristics over various geographical areas. In this study, we use long-term...

Regional Workshop on Climate Vulnerability Monitor: Focus on East Asia
East Asia has unique regional demographic and socioeconomic characteristics that put the adaptation in the region with more public good benefits. The findings of the Climate Vulnerability Monitor 3 should be read from the perspective of the region's unique characteristics. The findings affect the region by bringing trends that the region has not...

Consultative Conference on 'Development of multi-hazard risk and loss and damage framework of HKH’,
The Hindu Kush Himalayan region is one of the highly significant mountainous regions that play a crucial role beyond its boundaries in terms of people's well-being by providing a range of ecosystem services. The HKH region is facing severe climate change impacts and adaptation in the region needs to take an approach that considers the multi-hazard...

A comprehensive analysis of the crop effect on the urban-rural differences in land surface phenology
In Science of The Total Environment
The response of land surface phenology (LSP) to the urban heat island effect (UHI) is a useful biological indicator for understanding how vegetated ecosystems will be affected by future climate warming. However, vegetation cover in rural areas is often dominated by cultivated land, whose phenological timing is considerably influenced by...
JSPS-ICSSR Seminar on Understanding and Addressing Systemic Risks Behind the Socio-economic Impacts of COVID-19 in Japan and India: Developing a Roadmap for a Resilient and Sustainable Future
This presentation dwells on reasons why COVID-19 should be considered a transboundary risk and what it means for risk management in Asia. Transboundary risks are risks that emanate from outside the boundaries of a country or region. Countries have always faced transboundary risks. Wars for example are a typical example of a transboundary risk as...

In Nature-Based Solutions
More than 90 systematic reviews have been conducted on the topic of nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation (NBS-CCA). These prior reviews, however, are scattered across more than 45 different peer-reviewed journals and gray literature sources, making it difficult to follow all of the knowledge generated and remaining research gaps. In...
