世界の違法伐採対策は、この10年間で、木材消費国において違法伐採木材の取引や輸入規制が法制度化されるという大きな進展があった。違法伐採対策に取り組む理由として、熱帯林の減少防止と持続可能な森林管理の促進、違法伐採が生産国政府や消費国の木材市場に与える経済的な損失などが挙げられてきたが、現在は、非持続可能な消費と生産による気候危機や生態系の劣化などの地球規模の環境問題への対応策から派生した、持続可能な木材への需要の増大が違法伐採対策の推進力となっていると考えられる。
